How to Reset the ECU on a Ford Contour

    Place the Contour's transmission in park (automatic transmission) or very first gear (manual transmission). Engage the emergency brake and turn the ignition to the "Off" position Auto tools. Rotate the ignition back for the "On" position but usually do not get started the engine.

    Plug the scan tool's data cable in to the Contour's diagnostic information port, underneath the dashboard just above the pedal location. Turn on the scan tool and allow it to start up.

    Follow the instructions on the scan tool's screen to enter engine and transmission information.

    Choose "ECU" from the main menu. Select "Codes" and "Clear all current and stored DTCs." Wait for the scan tool to indicate that the codes have been cleared.

    Unplug the tool's data cable from the diagnostic data port. Start off the engine and ensure that the service engine light is not illuminated.

    Cut the 4 wire USB cable towards the desired general length as much as 9 feet using the wire cutting tool.

    Remove 1 inch in the outer insulation on each and every finish to reveal the 4 wires inside Auto diagnostic tools. If there's a metal braided sheath defending the inner wires, fold it back away from the inner wires.
